SUMMARY:Air Quality Sensing powered by Citizen Science - Part 2: How can low-cost\, open-source and easy-to-use AQ sensors be used?
DESCRIPTION:Low-cost and easy-to-use measuring devices for air quality determinants and noise\, such us the one produced by open-seneca\, have become available. Understanding the limitations of these type of devices in comparison to high-end exemplars regarding data accuracy and coverage\, they could become an powerful way of collecting data and involving the local population while doing it. \n\nThe Urban Pathways Project is involved in several sustainable urban mobility projects in developing countries\, which have a great potential in terms of improving air quality and reducing noise in urban areas. Measuring the specific effects of the demonstration activities on these variables will be invaluable in quantifying the impact of the projects’ activities and thus the potential impact that replication and scaling-up of those measures could have at the local and national level\, and ultimately at the global scale. \n\nIn our first webinar\, open-senecaa UK-based organisation\, whose goal is to transfer knowledge on how to build open-source sensor hardware to raise awareness and initiate a behavioural change among local communities\, provided an online training to previously identified local makerspaces\, universities or research centres in UP cities that have the skills and interest to build AQ measuring devices and that would be willing to replicate the workshops on site. In the second part of the webinar series the objective is to showcase the possible uses of this type of AQ sensors based on the experiences of projects carried out in different cities. \n\nAgenda \n\nThe collection of data via mobile AQ sensors in Buenos Aires \nMatías Acosta \nUNDP Argentina \n\nThe use of AQ sensors to measure the impact of short-term urban interventions \nJuan Manuel Guzmán \nCiudad Emergente\, \nSantiago de Chile \n\nThe Citizen Science AQ Programme of Medellín (tbc) \nGabriel Velázquez \nMedellín’s Early Warning System

SUMMARY:Environmental Protection in Cities: Common Challenges and Innovative Solutions
DESCRIPTION:The research project “Urban Environmental Protection International” is weighting challenges to protect the environment at the urban level in Brazil\, Russia\, India\, China\, South Africa and Indonesia. The Wuppertal Institute conducts this research by order of the German Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt\, UBA). \nThe aim of the research project is to provide a detailed overview of the importance of environmental issues in urban development in selected countries\, and to link the respective knowledge with German approaches. On the one hand\, the project searches innovative international approaches which could feed into UBA’s Research Agenda. On the other hand\, it identifies areas in which the UBA could consult cities and countries how to strengthen their activities to protect the environment at the urban level. \nOn 5 March 2020\, the final conference of the project will take place in Berlin (Beletage Conference Centre) to present and discuss the findings. The final conference will address the need for action and solutions for urban environmental protection in the six countries and present transferability of innovative strategies. In addition\, the conference will address the role of the local level for climate and environmental protection in the political multi-level system. \nIn addition to the research results of the Wuppertal Institute\, the conference programme will include contributions from representatives of the partner countries who will present innovative solutions for urban environmental protection and their local context. Representatives of German politics and administration\, associations and research institutions are cordially invited to participate in the conference to discuss international approaches to urban environmental protection and to reflect on impacts and scope for action for Germany. \nFor more information on the research project “Urban Environmental Protection in an International Context: Current State and Outlook” at the Wuppertal Institute\, click here. \nFor more information on the Urban Environmental Protection research at the Umweltbundesamt (UBA)\, click here. \nIf you haven’t registered for the event you may register below. \n\n[ninja_form id=3]

SUMMARY:Tactical Urbanism Part 2: Adopting Tactical Urbanism in your cities
DESCRIPTION:Copenhagen\, Amsterdam\, and New York were not always as attractive as they are today! They have undergone a steady transformation. New York is the most recent to the above list. Changing the streets of New York from the streets filled with yellow taxis to streets filled with umbrellas and outdoor seating is a story worth sharing! Amidst the extensive planning process of designing and implementing public spaces in the city\, the communication between city Government and users is often missed out\, leading to under-used or dead spaces. Tactical urbanism is one tool for reviving such spaces and turning them into people-friendly spaces using minimal cost and limited time\, through a community-led approach. comes with a dual advantage of acting as a tool to demonstrate the design live on the ground and also helps create awareness about the need for space. \nWhile the developing countries\, particularly the Asian cities; continue to adopt this ‘people-centric approach’\, it often becomes important to contextualize this process based on the densities and nature of the use of spaces. \nWe are eager to share with you our understanding and learning of tactical urbanism\, which we gained by researching the concept\, implementing it in cities and working with cities that have (or are) implementing the concept. We hope that you will join us in this multi-part series on Tactical Urbanism. \nThis series is brought to you by Wuppertal Institute\, under the initiative „EnvironMENTALISE“ of the Urban Pathways Project\, funded by the IKI from the German Ministry of Environment. The webinar is jointly presented with the World Resources Institute India. \nWebinar Part 2: Adopting Tactical Urbanism in your cities: In this part\, we will dive into the details on how to implement tactical urbanism backed with relevant case studies and much more content that we will add based on your inputs. The presenters will be: \n\nRajeev Malagi\, WRI India\nMaria Rosa Muñoz B.\, Wuppertal Institute\nMoses Kuiyaki\, Nairobi County\, Kenya

SUMMARY:European Road Safety Summer School 2019
DESCRIPTION:Are you a professional dealing with road safety and mobility issues? Do you want to expand your expertise in this field and learn from other countries? \nRoad safety progress in the European Union has stagnated for the last four years. Only urgent measures will reduce the 500 deaths that occur on EU roads every week. The Safe System approach is internationally considered to be best practice in road safety and in the European Road Safety Summer School\, we advise you on how to successfully implement this strategy in your country or region. \nThis five-day course will present an integrated approach to road safety\, based on good examples from European countries\, within a short time. There will also be ample networking and knowledge exchange opportunities. \nThe European Road Safety Summer School 2019 is an initiative of the Flemish Foundation for Traffic Knowledge (VSV)\, the Transportation Research Institute (IMOB) of Hasselt University\, the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC)\, the Polis Network\, and Road Safety GB. It will take place from 26 August to 30 August 2019 in Mechelen (Brussels North area). \nVisit the website to register for and find further details on the summer school.\n\nLocation: Belgium\nMechelen\n\nOrganizer: \n\n\nWebsite of Event: \nEuropean Road Safety Summer School Website
